“For some, the night can be a haunting place, where they are left alone with their thoughts as the world around them does to bed. Making them feel more alone than ever.” – Samaritans Of Singapore
What would you usually be doing at 12am-3am? Many of us would be asleep while a vulnerable group is out there seeking emotional support through the darkest hours.
In conjunction with the Suicide Prevention Week (10-16 September 2018), TBWA and Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) launched a social media campaign, #ThroughTheNight, on Instagram to support those getting through their darkest hours.
As part of this campaign, Instagram users were invited to contribute their message of hope daily from 12am to 3am and hashtag #ThroughTheNight. Through the online community effort, a single hashtag was amazingly transformed into a platform of hope, where youths could seek comfort and motivation from the works and crafts of strangers.
This deeply meaningful initiative also saw some participants going beyond the hashtag to welcome individuals to share their troubles with them via direct messages on the platform.
Local musicians, artists, and influencers also participated in this campaign with some revealing their personal experiences.
Several cafes and ice cream shops had also extended their operation hour in conjunction to the campaign. The Naughty Corner Gelato House had not only extended their hours to past midnight, but they had also launched a special gelato flavor that is named in conjunction with the campaign.
Through this campaign, SOS aims to progress towards “a more empathic community by spreading hope to people through their darkest time”.
Even though the campaign has come to an end, we should all remember that we can do our part by caring for those around us – be it through acts of service, quality time or even dropping an “are you okay?” message to those around us.
You can also still contribute to SOS’s cause by donating here or volunteering here.
